Local MCP server

nRF Connect for VS Code

nRF Connect for VS Code

The extension includes a local nrfConnect MCP server that exposes tools for working with your workspace. The server runs on localhost and reads the state of your open project, including applications, build folders, SDK and toolchain paths, board targets, and connected devices. This allows AI assistants to more efficiently build, flash, and manage devices.

The local nRF Connect MCP server is enabled by default and is registered with Visual Studio Code alongside Nordic MCP. Nordic MCP provides Nordic documentation and knowledge-base search, while the local server handles workspace operations.

You can configure the local MCP server in the extension settings, or disable it if you do not use AI-assisted development. If you want to configure the nrfConnect tools for individual requests, you can do so from the Configure Tools quick pick menu - see AI agent tools local configuration for more information.
