Use the nrfutil device fw-info command to read firmware version and image information from a connected device.

What the command returns depends on how the device is programmed and which interfaces it exposes:

  • On J-Link-connected devices, it inspects known locations in code memory to detect firmware from a built-in list of samples (primarily to support nRF Connect for Desktop companion firmware).
  • On devices with a Nordic Secure DFU trigger interface (nordicDfu trait), it reports versions of images in the bootloader and application slots.
  • On devices with MCUboot (mcuBoot trait), it reports versions and metadata for images on the device.

To compare flash contents against a HEX file, use device fw-verify instead.
