The prescaler is used to set the SPI frequency.
The prescaler divides the core clock by the divisor to make the SPI clock. The resulting frequency is given by 'core clock' / DIVISOR. Different instances of the SPIM might have different core clocks. The SPIM core clock and divisor limits is given in the instance table in Instances.
Note that a low prescaler setting may require changing the default RXDELAY value to ensure correct sampling.
Only even numbers is allowed for the divisor.
