nRF Connect for VS Code

nRF Connect for Visual Studio Code is a set of four custom-made extensions from Nordic Semiconductor:

Extension Type Usage Download links
nRF Connect for VS Code Main extension Develop, build, and test nRF Connect SDK applications. VS Code Marketplace

Open VSX Registry
nRF DeviceTree Installed by the main extension Display custom hardware layouts in a tree structure and edit them using Devicetree Visual Editor. VS Code Marketplace

Open VSX Registry
nRF Kconfig Installed by the main extension View and customize configuration options with the Kconfig GUI. VS Code Marketplace

Open VSX Registry
nRF Terminal Installed by the main extension Use UI-based access points to connect over serial port or RTT. VS Code Marketplace

Open VSX Registry

All these extensions must be installed and used together for nRF Connect for VS Code to work correctly with the supported SDKs. While you can install only some of them, many of their features are interrelated. For this reason, when this documentation uses the term the extension, it refers to the whole set and assumes you have installed all four extensions.

On the Visual Studio Code Marketplace, you can install all of the extensions at once using the nRF Connect for Visual Studio Code Extension Pack.

Note

As of June 2026, the Extension Pack is deprecated. The main nRF Connect for VS Code extension now installs the other extensions. The Extension Pack will be removed as part of one of the future releases.

The extension will inform you if any of these extensions is missing.
