The glossary contains terms and acronyms that are used in this document.
16-state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM)
A digital modulation technique used for signals in which four bits are modulated at
once by selecting one of 16 possible combinations of carrier phase shift and amplitude.

AT command
A command used to control the modem.

Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK)
A digital modulation technique used for signals in which one bit is modulated by
selecting one of two possible carrier phase shifts with a 180-phase difference.
BPSK
Carrier Wave (CW)
A single-frequency electromagnetic wave that can be modulated in amplitude, frequency,
or phase to convey information.

Cat-NB1
NB-IoT User Equipment (UE) category with 200 kHz UE bandwidth and a single RX antenna,
specified in 3GPP Release 13.
Cat-NB2
An upgraded version of Cat-NB1, specified in 3GPP Release 14.
Check Digit (CD)
The last one-digit number of the International Mobile (Station) Equipment Identity (IMEI) code used for error
detection.

DECT NR+
A non-cellular radio standard included as part of the 5G standards by the
ITU.

Device Under Test (DUT)
A manufactured product undergoing testing.

Electronic Serial Number (ESN)
A unique number embedded on a microchip for identifying mobile devices.

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
A satellite navigation system with global coverage. The system provides signals from
space transmitting positioning and timing data to GNSS receivers, which use this data to
determine location.

General-Purpose Input/Output (GPIO)
A digital signal pin that can be used as input, output, or both. It is uncommitted and can be controlled by the user at runtime.

International Mobile (Station) Equipment Identity (IMEI)
A unique code consisting of 14 digits and a check digit for identifying 3GPP-based
mobile devices.

International Mobile (Station) Equipment Identity, Software Version (IMEISV)
A unique code consisting of 16 decimal digits and two software version digits for
identifying 3GPP-based mobile devices.

Internet Protocol (IP)
The network layer communications protocol in the Internet protocol suite for relaying datagrams across network boundaries. Its routing function enables internetworking, and essentially establishes the Internet.

International Reference Alphabet (IRA)
A seven-bit coded character set for information exchange.

Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA)
In a radio receiving system, an electronic amplifier that amplifies a very low-power
signal without significantly degrading its signal-to-noise ratio.

Long-Term Evolution (LTE)
A wireless broadband communication standard for mobile devices and data terminals, based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA technologies.

LTE-M
An open standard that is most suitable for medium throughput applications requiring
low power, low latency, and/or mobility, like asset tracking, wearables, medical, POS, and
home security applications. Also known as E-UTRAN (WB-S1) and Cat-M1.

A dedicated control interface for the RF front-end subsystem. MIPI Alliance

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT)
A narrowband technology standard with longer range, lower throughput, and better
penetration in, for example, cellars and parking garages compared to LTE-M. NB-IoT is most
suitable for static, low throughput applications like smart metering, smart agriculture, and
smart city applications. Also known as E-UTRAN (NB-S1), Cat-NB1, and Cat-NB2.

Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN)
A 3GPP communication system that delivers wireless connectivity using satellites,
drones, or high-altitude platforms instead of ground-based infrastructure.

nRF Cloud
Nordic Semiconductor's platform for connecting IoT devices to the cloud, viewing and
analyzing device message data, prototyping ideas that use Nordic Semiconductor chips, and
more. It includes a public REST API that can be used for building IoT solutions. See nRF Cloud portal (nrfcloud.com).
Non-volatile Memory (NVM)
Memory that can retrieve stored information even after having been
power-cycled.

One Time Programmable (OTP) memory
A type of non-volatile memory that permits data to be written to memory only
once.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)
A type of digital transmission and a method of encoding digital data on multiple
carrier frequencies.

Power Amplifier (PA)
A device used to increase the transmit power level of a radio signal.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
A board that connects electronic components.

Production Test Image (PTI)
A modem firmware version used in the device manufacturing phase.

Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)
A form of modulation used to represent an analog signal with a binary signal where the
switching frequency is fixed, and all the pulses corresponding to one sample are contiguous
in the digital signal.

The smallest unit of resources that can be allocated to a user.

A unique six-digit number part of the IMEI code
identifying each equipment within each Type Allocation Code (TAC).

The level of signal power compared to the level of noise power, often expressed in
decibels (dB).

Software Version Number (SVN)
Part of the IMEI code identifying the revision of the
software installed on a mobile device.

A card used in User Equipment (UE) containing data for subscriber
identification.

System in Package (SiP)
Several integrated circuits, often from different technologies, enclosed in a single module that performs as a system or subsystem.

System on Chip (SoC)
A microchip that integrates all the necessary electronic circuits and components of a
computer or other electronic systems on a single integrated circuit.

Type Allocation Code (TAC)
The initial eight-digit part of an International Mobile (Station) Equipment Identity
(IMEI) code used for identifying the model of a mobile phone.

User Equipment (UE)
Any device used by an end-user to communicate. The UE consists of the Mobile Equipment
(ME) and the Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC).

A unique address for identifying each slave device in an RFFE (RF Front-End)
system.
